Experience the Heartbeat of Plains Cree Culture at Sturgeon Lake First Nation Annual Pow Wow
(Sturgeon Lake First Nation, Treaty 6 Territory) Sturgeon Lake First Nation (SLFN) is inviting the public to its annual competition pow wow from Aug. 16-18, 2024, offering a unique opportunity to experience and learn about Plains Cree culture firsthand.
A pow wow is a vibrant, colourful, cultural gathering that holds deep significance for First Nations across North America. It is a time to celebrate traditions, spirituality, and the bonds that unite the community. The dances and singing contests are the highlight of the event. Expressed through drum groups’ languages, the songs often tell stories, offer prayers, and celebrate life’s beauty, making them an integral part of the pow wow experience.
Grand entries will take place on Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m.
Beyond the competitions, pow wows are social gatherings where people reconnect with family and friends and serve as a teaching tool for younger generations. The event will also feature an array of food and craft vendors.
Chief Christine Longjohn emphasized the significance of welcoming the broader public to this event as part of the ongoing journey toward reconciliation.
“We welcome everyone to join us in our special annual cultural celebration,” said Chief Longjohn. “The pow wow is a chance for non-Indigenous people in Prince Albert and the surrounding areas to engage with our traditions, learn about our way of life, and help build stronger, more respectful relationships between our communities.”
The event is free and open to everyone.
